Q:  My five year old has a long scar on her cheek. When would a plastic surgeon consider treating it to minimize its appearance?
A:

Thank you for your question. The surgical treatment of scars is a procedure frequently performed by plastic surgeons.  Scars are the unavoidable result of injuries, disease, or surgery.  It is impossible to totally remove the presence of a scar, yet plastic surgery may improve the appearance and texture of scars.  There are many different techniques of scar revision surgery.  If the scar is very noticeable and bothers the child, it can lead to self esteem issues. Scar revision can be done any time, ideally 6-12 months after the injury. The procedure may need to be repeated as the child grows. Each case is different, the best way to decide when and how to treat the scar is to evaluate it individually. Please feel free to call our office for an appointment.

Q:  Will you explain the difference between the "around the world" surgery procedure? I hear everyone talking about this and I have no idea what it entails.
A:  Thank you for your question. "Around the world" is a body lift or belt lipectomy. Body lifts are surgical procedures and require incisions to remove excess skin from the lower abdominal and lower back area.  With that the body contoures are smoother and more toned. The abdomen is tighter and the buttocks and hips are lifted. This is ideal for some one who has had massive weight loss or loose skin after having a baby or due to aging. This is not a procedure for weight loss. You should be at your ideal or desired weight for at least two to six months before considering this operation. The details of this procedure vary depending where and how the loose skin is distributed.

Q:  On average, how much would it cost to get a tummy tuck after I have my second child? Can you do the surgery while I am still in the hospital after child birth?
A:

You are correct to ask for a price. In general a tummy tuck, following pregnancy is not covered by insurance carriers as this is considered an elective cosmetic procedure.

The price of a tummy tuck, also referred to as abdominoplasty, varies considerably.  A “tummy tuck” can represent a limited operation that removes a small amount of loose, excess skin and fat or it can be much larger procedure with extensive tissue removal and or tightening of loose abdominal muscles. Also a patient’s expectations and desires need to be factored.  The best advice I could give would be to schedule a consultation to determine which procedure is right for you.

As for a patient interested in abdominoplasty immediately after child birth I would not recommend this. The pregnancy process causes pelvic organs along with the soft tissues and skin to expand in order to accommodate the developing child. Immediately after child birth these structures require time to return back to normal.  In this situation I would give the same advice I would give to a patient seeking body contouring after massive weight loss.  Allow a sufficient time for your body shape and weight to stabilize.  By doing this, you will more likely get the result desired.

Q:  I have extremely sensitive skin, but am considering some facial procedures. Is there anything that I should avoid doing? How will Botox or other procedures affect my skin?
A:

With sensitive you should careful using any topical chemical treatments. Retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, chemical peels could irritate your skin. Botox and Juvederm would be a good choice if you wanted to correct lines and wrinkles. Surgical procedure such as a face lift or brow lift would not effect your sensitive skin. You should avoid the sun, wear a good sun screen for your skin type and use a moisturizer. A good skin care regimen for sensitive would greatly improve your skin tone and texture.  Dry skin is always more sensitive. We would be glad to help you find a skin care regimen for your sensitive skin.
