After 13 years of service, the owners of Gold’s Gym in Statesboro decided to
close their facility in order to provide retail and office space in its
location.  They offered their manager of 10 years, Angie Hitchens, the
option of purchasing and re-locating the business.  She, along with Brandon
Blair, opened 180fitness in January 2006.   On October 16, 2006, they moved
into their new, larger facility at 4-A College Plaza (located behind
Zaxby’s).

Brandon Blair, co-owner of 180fitness, holds a Masters of Business
Administration degree from Georgia Southern University.  Brandon is also a
certified personal trainer.  In June, he won the Middleweight Novice Class
and placed second in the Middleweight Open Class at the 2007 Southern Isles
Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship.

Q:  I have some problems doing push-ups...Do you have any other suggestions for ways to workout my arms without having to do push-ups?
A:  Pushups are mainly for your chest, shoulders, and triceps.  If you're having problems with pushups or arm exercises, stop by 180 fitness.  After joining the gym, our consultants provide a free workout orientation for our members at their request.   We can make an appointment to show you how to use the circuit equipment properly and answer any general exercise questions you may have.  For a more personalized plan, our trainers offer several different personal training packages.

Q:  Hi Brandon, I'm 38 years old and have been a type 1 Diabetic since I was 15. Over the past few years I have really avoided the exercise thing, but I want to change that. Can your trainers help me with a plan to get back in shape? I am somewhat overweight, but still pretty active. My cardio is in dire need as I am short of breath on walks and climbing stairs. Can you help?
A:  It is good that you are taking an active approach and realizing that exercise is an integral part in the fight against Diabetes! However, don't forget the importance of your dietary needs.  As for our trainers, they are very qualified to help get you back into shape.  First, it is important to talk to your doctor before starting any exercise plan.  Your doctor can give you guidelines which will provide your trainer with any limitations you may have.   This will help us be even more effective with your overall fitness plan. We look forward to seeing you and helping you attain your goals!

Q:  I just love reading your column here on Ask the Expert. You always have great words of wisdom. Thank you! My question is whether or not you think the "Ab Lounge" works. Are you familiar with it? I wanted to buy one because I struggle with back and neck pain when I do abdominal excercies, and the Ab Lounge claims that it will help out with that pain. Any ideas?
A:  Thanks for your kind comments!  If you are struggling with neck or back pain, it is best to seek the advice of a personal trainer or exercise specialist.  They can critique your form and offer alternate exercises that will minimize or alleviate neck and back pain.  The Ab Lounger may be fine, but I don't believe it is necessary to purchase a machine for ab exercies.  You can target your abs with a wide array of exercises that require little or no additional equipment.

Q:  What is a good fitness plan that will help me maintain my current body weight. I am a 31 year old woman and I am extremely busy everyday.
A:

When it comes to fitness and exercise, you have to make it a priority! It has to be a lifestyle change, incorporating a few hours into each week.  Ideally, you should try to make it into the gym to weight train (or try BodyPump) at least twice a week.  Weight training builds lean muscle, which burns fat at rest.  If you don't have more time to make it to the gym, cardio can be done at home - walking, riding your bike, pushing your kids in a stroller, etc.  Last, but certainly not least, you must maintain a healthly diet to maintain your current body weight.  Also remember - muscle weighs more than fat, so judge by your clothes and not the scales!  You can be more toned and in better shape and still weigh the same or more!

Q:  I have been trying your spin classes at 180 Fitness and I am wondering what parts of my body they target? I feel a lot of soreness in my legs the following day after a class. Also- How many calories does that class burn??
A:

RPM is designed to increase you cardiovascular fitness, burn fat, and shape/tone your legs, hips, and butt.  Therefore, it is totally normal for your legs to be sore the next day, especially if you just starting taking RPM.  The more your ride, the less sore you will be.

RPM will not only increase your leg strength and endurance without building bulk, it also burns an average of 600-800 calories in a normal 50 minute class!
