Q:  I have a close family member who is addicted to drugs. They continue to claim that they are "afraid to quit using." Why are people "afraid" to quit using drugs and what would make them decide to quit using altogether?
A:  Some people are afraid to quit using because of the physical withdrawals.  A person, depending on the drug they were using, the length of time, the dose feels bad when they do not have the substance.  Different substances have different withdrawals.  Withdrawals can range from mild such as headache, irritable, upset stomach to hallucinations, seizures and possible death.  Some people have state dependent learning which means what you learn while high you may feel that you do better while high.  If a person has been using a long time they may feel that they cannot function without the substance.  What would make a person quit altogether can be related to many things tragedy, legal problems, divorce or a spiritual awakening.  Lots a things can help a person decide to quit but sadly pain is usually the greatest motivator.  There are many resources out there if a person desires to change their life that do not cost

Q:  Is a person who is no longer drinking or using still in recovery?
A:  Recovery is a choice.  It is a process of dealing with the physical, spriritual and emotional aspects of addiction.  A person that is not addressing these areas and just "not drinking or using" is sometimes referred to as a "dry drunk."  Recovery is more than not drinking and using.

Q:  Why isn't everyone who has a chemical dependency in recovery?
A:

That would be great if everybody that had chemical dependency was in recovery.  There are a variety of issues that keep a person from being in recovery, denial that there is a problem, enablers that help keep them from seeing  there is a problem, not wanting to do the work it takes to be in recovery, tovic enviroment or relationships, not realizing there is a solution due to the nature of damage done by the substance.  The list goes on and on.  Recovery is a journey, not a destination.

Q:  what addiction is the most hard to overcome? My mother has smoked cigarettes for years...what is the first step to nicotine recovery?
A:  I would dare to say the hardest addiction to overcome is whatever addiction you are trying to overcome.  Because of many factors, enviroment, willpower, length of time using, amount used, type of support etc. would need to be taken into consideration.  The first step to quitting is desire.
